Google’s AI Overviews are quietly admitting a problem: users do not trust a summary that feels like a sealed box. So the box is being drilled open, with more links to external sites pushed directly into the AI panel and around it, turning what had looked like a closed answer into a denser web directory.
Publishers fear traffic loss, and that anxiety is forcing design changes. Google now highlights individual sources more aggressively, attaches clearer citations to specific claims, and experiments with interface tweaks that surface site logos, domain names and expandable link clusters, rather than a single generic reference line under the generated text.
Search economics sit in the background of this redesign. If AI Overviews hoard attention, ad impressions and click‑through rates on organic results take a hit, eroding the incentive structure that funds open‑web content. By inserting more visible outbound links and richer attribution, Google is trying to prove that generative answers can coexist with a functioning referral engine, not quietly replace it.
