Sony nudges GTA 6 fans toward PS5
2026-05-11
Marketing, not technology, is firing the first shot in the next console shift. A new PlayStation email campaign tells selected PlayStation 4 owners, in plain terms, that they will need a PlayStation 5 if they want to play the next Grand Theft Auto. No logo for the title appears, yet the wording leans hard on the idea of a “future Grand Theft Auto” that will demand newer hardware and a faster storage pipeline.
The message is blunt: Sony wants the franchise to do its upgrade work. Grand Theft Auto has long functioned as a system seller, and this time Sony is moving early, pairing the tease with reminders about SSD load times, DualSense haptics and 4K output, all framed as requirements rather than luxuries. Backward compatibility, once advertised as a safety net for PlayStation 4 libraries, is now treated as secondary when a prestige release comes into view.
For players still on PlayStation 4, the subtext is clear and slightly ruthless. Stay put and accept that the most hyped open world in development will pass you by, or absorb the cost of a new console well before any preorders for the game even open. In turning anticipation into leverage, Sony is betting that the fear of missing Grand Theft Auto will move households faster than any technical spec sheet ever could.
