Omega-3 Supplements Fail Memory Test
2026-06-19
Omega-3’s glossy brain image just took a hit. A large controlled trial reports that taking an omega-3 fatty acid supplement did not sharpen memory, did not speed thinking, and did not slow loss of brain tissue in many supplement users who were carefully followed.
At the heart of the disappointment sits a simple point: biochemistry on paper does not guarantee performance in a living brain. Researchers measured cognitive outcomes with standardized neuropsychological tests and tracked brain volume using structural magnetic resonance imaging, yet found no meaningful separation between the omega-3 group and those swallowing an inert placebo capsule across multiple domains of learning, attention, and executive function.
The findings also cut against a dominant consumer story that equates dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids with automatic neural protection. Docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid remain essential components of neuronal membranes and synaptic transmission, but the trial suggests that adding them as a supplement, on top of usual diet and medical care, may not rescue aging neurons from atrophy or preserve short-term recall in the way marketing claims imply.
