Microsoft trims Surface specs to cut prices

Price, not performance, is clearly calling the shots in Microsoft’s latest Surface refresh. The company is introducing cheaper configurations of the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop that strip back memory to hit lower starting figures and widen their addressable market.
The new 12-inch Surface Pro now starts at 849 dollars, while the 13-inch Surface Laptop opens at 949 dollars, both configured with 8GB of RAM rather than the 16GB that had been positioned as the default tier. That shift underlines a bet that many mainstream buyers, especially in office productivity and browser-driven workflows, will tolerate tighter memory headroom in exchange for a lower capital outlay on premium-branded hardware.
This move looks less like a technical statement and more like channel strategy. By lowering the entry ticket, Microsoft gives retailers and enterprise resellers a sharper price point for tenders, even if power users will read 8GB as a constraint on multitasking, virtualization, and heavier creative suites. The trade is simple: leaner specs today to defend Surface share against aggressively priced rivals in the same thin-and-light category.
