Musk Rejects Report On SpaceX AI Device
2026-07-02
A supposed secret gadget is now the loudest point of dispute around SpaceX. A report from the Wall Street Journal said the company had shown investors and other stakeholders a prototype handset built for artificial intelligence features, framing it as part of the story around a blockbuster stock listing.
Musk’s reaction was blunt, and it matters because narrative is currency in private markets. On social media he denied that SpaceX had presented any such device, pushing back against the idea that an AI-focused product briefing had been used to excite potential shareholders ahead of an initial public offering, and rejecting the suggestion that hardware strategy had shifted toward consumer electronics.
The dispute highlights how AI has become a default marketing script for late-stage companies. Investors are primed to hear about inference chips, large language models and edge computing, so a dedicated handset would fit neatly into that expectation, yet it would also sit oddly beside SpaceX’s established focus on orbital launch systems and the Starlink satellite broadband network, which rely on rocketry, spectrum allocation and ground terminal infrastructure rather than flashy handheld devices.
