iPhone 18 RAM Bump, Same Old Limits
2026-07-04
Two iOS 27 features will stay out of reach for many buyers, even as iPhone 18 hardware steps up. The lower-end iPhone 18 and the cheaper iPhone 18e are now expected to ship with 9GB of RAM, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a modest increase over the 8GB in their iPhone 17 predecessors and a change framed as support for Apple Intelligence workloads.

That upgrade looks less generous once the line is viewed as a hierarchy rather than a family. Kuo says iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra will continue to carry 12GB of RAM, matching the iPhone 17 Pro tier and keeping the memory headroom required for two new Apple Intelligence tricks in iOS 27 that remain restricted to the top devices. The split underscores a deliberate product segmentation strategy: enough memory on mainstream phones to keep existing on-device machine learning models responsive, but a clear ceiling that pushes power users toward higher margins and a more aggressive silicon, neural engine, and RAM bundle.
The irony is stark. A headline spec bump sells progress, yet the headline software experiences stay gated. For developers building against iOS 27, that means treating the iPhone 18 not as a blank Apple Intelligence canvas but as a constrained deployment target, where the real differentiator is not clock speed alone but the combination of RAM capacity and how much of it Apple chooses to expose to its own generative models.
