Samsung moves first on foldable race
2026-07-08
Samsung is not waiting for Apple. A new Galaxy Z Fold, expected to carry the Z Fold 8 name, is set to headline the next Galaxy Unpacked event, signaling an aggressive bid to frame the foldable story before a folding iPhone even appears.
This time, design tells the strategy. The device is widely expected to adopt a shorter, wider form factor, a clear shift from the tall, narrow silhouette that defined earlier Z Fold models and a move that brings its footprint closer to what industry leaks describe for Apple’s planned foldable iPhone. That reshaped chassis should change hinge torque distribution and internal PCB layout, giving Samsung more room to refine durability and heat dissipation while still presenting a front display that feels closer to a standard slab phone.
The timing is no accident. By staging the launch well before Apple’s entry, Samsung can leverage its status as the leading foldable phone maker to lock in premium customers, reassure developers about large-screen app behavior, and strengthen its brand moat around flexible OLED and hinge engineering. Carriers and accessory partners gain a ready-made hero product to market, while investors get another data point on whether foldables are a zero-sum battle with traditional flagships or a separate, sustained tier of the smartphone market.
