Microplastic pollution may have found an unexpected partner in fulvic acid. New laboratory work highlighted by Propel Health Australia reports direct interactions between the naturally occurring organic compound and synthetic polymer particles under tightly controlled test conditions.
The study, published in Science of the Total Environment, argues that these contacts are not cosmetic but governed by defined physicochemical rules, with electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interactions and surface adsorption all shaping how fulvic acid associates with microplastic fragments in water. Researchers used standardized microplastic particles and measured shifts in zeta potential, particle size distribution and dissolved organic carbon to track how fulvic molecules clustered around or attached to the plastic surfaces.
Propel Health Australia contends that this type of mechanistic work matters because it hints at a double-edged role for natural organic matter in aquatic systems. On one hand, fulvic acid could modify microplastic surface charge and aggregation, potentially affecting sedimentation, transport and bioavailability. On the other, the same interactions might alter how metals, pharmaceuticals or other contaminants sorb to those particles, changing their environmental fate and toxicological profile. The company says it intends to follow emerging datasets closely as regulators and industry reassess how microplastics and dissolved organics intersect in real-world waters.
