Iloilo places province under dengue alert

Dengue now defines the public health agenda in Iloilo, not routine clinic work. The provincial government has raised an alert after reported infections exceeded the health department’s alert threshold, triggering mandatory vector surveillance and province-wide search-and-destroy operations against mosquito breeding sites.
Officials argue that case numbers alone no longer tell the full story, and epidemiologic surveillance now focuses on clustering of febrile cases and test-confirmed dengue in barangays. Health units have been directed to intensify larval surveys, ovitrap monitoring, and door-to-door inspections, using entomologic indices such as the Breteau index to flag high-risk communities.
Hospitals are being pushed into a preemptive posture. Provincial authorities have ordered triage areas to prepare for a spike in patients with acute febrile illness and warning signs of plasma leakage, while blood banks review stocks in anticipation of severe dengue cases. Local governments are tasked to mobilize barangay brigades for cleanup drives, enforce container management for standing water, and sustain information campaigns on early consultation and recognition of warning symptoms.
