Thirty-four deaths signal a preventable failure before they describe a statistic. Recorded by the City Veterinary Office, the human rabies cases span several recent years and track a pattern officials say should not exist in a city with regular anti-rabies campaigns and access to post-exposure care in health facilities.
What emerges instead is a gap between policy and behavior. Rabies, a fatal viral encephalitis transmitted through infected animal bites, is fully preventable with two tools: systematic pet vaccination and timely post-exposure prophylaxis using vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin. Yet many victims reached clinics late, or never at all, after underestimating dog bites or relying on home remedies that have no virological basis.
The City Veterinary Office frames the response less as a technical challenge than a test of compliance. Officials urge owners to present dogs and cats for regular vaccination, maintain proper animal registration, and seek immediate wound washing and medical assessment after any bite, no matter how minor it appears.
