Acer’s Vero 16 treats the sealed laptop shell as a design flaw, not a selling point. Instead of gluing the machine shut, the company is turning the notebook into something closer to a modular appliance, with a user-swappable motherboard and CPU at its core.

This approach challenges the standard thin-and-disposable playbook that has dominated portable computers, because the motherboard normally locks in the processor, memory traces and high‑speed interconnects in a single, throwaway slab. Here, Acer exposes that slab as a replaceable module, secured by conventional fasteners and designed to be removed without heat guns, solvent or specialized jigs, so performance upgrades no longer require a completely new chassis and display.
The move also reframes what “laptop lifecycle” means. Instead of tying performance to a full-device refresh, Acer is betting that owners will keep the same enclosure, keyboard and display while swapping in upgraded silicon over time, an approach that echoes circular design principles and right‑to‑repair campaigns more than it does consumer electronics fashion cycles.
