Pakistan’s glittering promise of cheap protein now hides a microbiological debt. Inside sealed poultry houses, tens of thousands of broilers share air, litter and feed, turning each shed into what microbiologists bluntly call a pathogen sponge that absorbs, mixes and amplifies infectious agents under constant drug pressure.

The uncomfortable truth is that routine antibiotic dosing has become the invisible scaffolding of this growth model. Broad‑spectrum antimicrobials, often including fluoroquinolones and colistin, are added to feed and water not just for therapy but for growth promotion and metaphylaxis, accelerating selective pressure on bacterial populations in the birds’ gut microbiota and in the manure accumulating under the slats.
More alarming still, these sheds do not trap what they create. Resistant Enterobacteriaceae and other opportunistic organisms travel off‑farm on workers’ clothing, on dust plumes from exhaust fans, and through untreated litter spread as fertilizer, providing multiple transmission routes for extended‑spectrum beta‑lactamase producers into surrounding communities and food chains.
Public health agencies argue that this is not just an agricultural issue but a systems failure. Weak veterinary regulation, fragmented supply chains and minimal surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in animal production mean stewardship plans stay mostly on paper, while the bacteria accumulating resistance genes in these houses quietly gain the upper hand.
