Heat From Screens Marks Young Skin

The warmth pooling beneath a laptop can leave more than a cozy feeling. Doctors say repeated contact with heat-emitting electronics is increasingly linked to toasted skin syndrome in children, whose long gaming sessions, streaming habits, or homework routines can keep one patch of skin exposed for hours. The marks can linger.

This is not a harmless screen-time side effect. Low-level infrared radiation can repeatedly dilate superficial blood vessels, producing a mottled red-brown pattern that may progress to hyperpigmentation. You may not notice it at first. The rash often appears on thighs, knees, or the abdomen, where a device rests against skin, and it can resemble bruising or other dermatological problems.
The fix is plain, yet families often miss it. Put distance between hot devices and bare skin, use a desk or stable stand, and stop using equipment that becomes unusually warm. Persistent discoloration deserves medical advice, especially if it does not fade after heat exposure ends. You would not press a heating pad against a child for hours. So why let a laptop do it?
