Old Rubbish, Fresh Warning on Dorset Shore

A corroded tin lid caught the light on a west Dorset beach, carrying waste from World War Two into a modern cleanup. It should not be here. Nearby, litter pickers also recovered a half-century-old medicine bottle from Colombia, a small object with an enormous travel history.
This is not harmless nostalgia. You can call such finds curiosities, but they are better read as evidence of endurance: discarded packaging survives saltwater, abrasion and burial, then returns when tides and storms shift the shore. The lid and bottle did not merely sit still. They moved, weathered and waited.
The message is uncomfortably simple. Beach litter is not always recent, and cleanup work can uncover rubbish that has outlasted the habits that produced it. You see a bottle. You see a lid. But you are also seeing a long bill for careless disposal. If you found either item, would you call it history or rubbish?
