The RAID enclosure is the real spark. A RAID controller can be pictured as a network switch for data blocks, directing placement across drives; the precise storage-engineering concepts are block-level data placement, data striping, and mirroring. Nextorage has not supplied specifications in its announcement, so performance, supported RAID modes, host interface, thermal design, and capacity remain open questions. That restraint matters. RAID can favor throughput, redundancy, or both, but each choice carries trade-offs in usable capacity and failure recovery.
The companion drives make the release smarter than a one-device stunt.
