EU Sets Heart Check Line at 35
2026-09-29
35 is the new line. The European Union now advises one heart-disease screening for people under that threshold and regular checks from it onward, a division that treats cardiovascular risk less as a late-life surprise than as a slow account kept by blood vessels. That is sensible. Hypertension and dyslipidemia can proceed without drama, while atherosclerosis lays down damage long before symptoms demand attention.
The policy is overdue. A measurement of blood pressure, lipids, and other risk markers does not prevent disease by itself, but it can expose risk before myocardial infarction or stroke converts neglect into an emergency. Access will decide everything. If appointments, confirmatory testing, and treatment remain uneven, the advice will sort citizens by capacity to obtain care, not by clinical need. The line must lead somewhere. At the clinic door, an age threshold is only ink unless it opens onto sustained prevention.
