Apple's $1,999 Foldable Bet

6 million units would turn Apple's anticipated iPhone Duo into less of a novelty than a test of appetite at the upper edge of the demand curve. The price is the story. Counterpoint Research sees strong demand potential at $1,999, treating the foldable as a premium device with a defined audience rather than a mass-market handset.

That forecast is plausible, but only if the device earns its premium through durable hardware and clear daily use. Foldables sell status, yet status alone cannot overcome price elasticity of demand. The hinge will matter. So will OLED panel reliability, manufacturing yield, and unit economics, because a high sticker price can hide thin margins only briefly.
The larger wager is strategic. Six million sales would be small beside the iPhone's wider business, but sufficient to give Apple leverage with component suppliers and to probe cannibalization among its most expensive phones. The arithmetic is blunt. At $1,999, that volume implies nearly $12 billion in sales before discounts, taxes, and channel costs. The folded screen, when shut, may say less about what a phone can do than about what buyers still wish an object can signify.
