Deadlock Overtakes TF2's Steam Peak
2026-10-12
Deadlock has overtaken Valve's veteran. With 262,145 concurrent Steam players, the game has surpassed Team Fortress 2's all-time peak of 253,997, putting a different Valve title above a familiar multiplayer fixture on this particular measure. The margin is modest. At 8,148 players, or roughly 3.2 percent, it makes the comparison close without making the result ambiguous.

The record deserves careful reading. Although peak concurrent users offers a clear count of accounts playing simultaneously, it does not establish how many distinct people played across a longer period or how frequently they returned. Attendance is not allegiance. For Valve, the result demonstrates that Deadlock can assemble a larger simultaneous Steam audience than Team Fortress 2 ever recorded, but player retention would answer a separate question about whether that audience keeps coming back. The distinction matters here. A single maximum can make a compelling headline while leaving the game's ordinary activity, repeat visits and longer-term audience size outside the frame.
The comparison cuts both ways. While Deadlock takes the higher position, Team Fortress 2 supplies the benchmark that gives the number its editorial force: without that reference, 262,145 would remain a large count with less immediate meaning. Neither game disappears here. Their respective peaks describe separate high points, not a direct transfer of players, and the figures alone cannot show whether one audience has abandoned another. Attention has changed seats. On Steam's scoreboard, the newcomer occupies the higher chair; whether it becomes the more familiar presence is a question that a crowded room cannot answer.
